Age Group Formation

KAFC will comply with US Soccer’s nationwide shift from birth-year teams to school-year teams (Aug 1–July 31 cutoff), starting in the 2026-2027 season and moving forward. While the transition will cause short-term roster disruption, USYS, WYS, and KAFC believes it ultimately benefits players socially, competitively, and in college recruiting.

KAFC Supports the Change

  1. Keeps senior teams together Under birth-year teams, seniors were often split apart, forcing painful cuts late in players’ careers. School-year teams allow players to graduate and “sunset” together with their classmates.

  2. Improves college recruiting College coaches recruit by graduation year, not birth year. School-year teams align players with their recruiting timelines and reduce compliance issues for college coaches.

  3. Eliminates most “trapped players” 8th graders with fall birthdays often had no fall league when teammates moved to high school soccer. The new system largely fixes this issue.

Key Implementation Points

  • Teams will now be formed using Aug 1 – July 31 seasonal year cutoffs: WYS Matrix

  • Roster changes are expected across all age groups.

  • KAFC’s priority is competitive, healthy, and balanced teams.

Tryouts & Rostering

  • 2011 (Aug–Dec) players who are U15 will try out in May 2026. There will be a Boys 8th grade league for the remainder of the season to connect the ages.

  • Playing down is not allowed

  • Playing up remains possible, case-by-case, and after team balance is confirmed. KAFC's Play-up Policy
